DUN Plugin for HTC One X Plus

Post by hanno » Wed Oct 09, 2013 11:36 am

Hi all,

i'm currently trying to get the DUN Plugin running with my HTC One X Plus and my VW Premium FSE.
After fighting some hours against the HTC kernel sources, I finally managed to build a ppp_async.ko and tried to install it on my OXP. However, after installing both module and DUN plugin nothing happens: PPP State remains idle.

Furthermore I tried to enable logging in order to check if my module was loaded correctly, but RSAP only writes 0-sized log files. Additionally, every time I exit the settings screen (e.g. switching to another application or even opening the status page of the DUN plugin, the "logging"-setting is reseted.

Any hints or does someone have experiences with the OXp and the DUN Plugin and can help?

Thanks,
Hanno

The DUN plugin also needs the BlueZ Bluetooth stack. First check if sdptool works:

Code: Select all
sdptool search DUN
-or-
sdptool search --bdaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx DUN

where xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx is a Bluetooth address of the car. If the car is switched on you'll get the service record. If you get an error message or the sdptool is missing you can stop here, then you don't have a working BlueZ stack.

After that check if the rfcomm utility works by typing

Code: Select all
rfcomm bind 0 xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx c

where c is the channel number from the sdptool output. If you enter

Code: Select all
rfcomm show 0

it should show an active connection.

If you get this far let me know.

Thanks for the help and sorry for the delayed response.

So the "sdptool" seems to work (not tested inside my car), but however "rfcomm" is missing on my phone. Any chance for me to go on or will it be a waste of time for me to sit down with a laptop in my car?

I forgot: the plugin uses it's own version of rfcomm. You can find it in /data/data/com.android_rsap.dunplugin/app_bin.

Thanks again for your help ... here the results of my first test-run :) :

Code: Select all
InsertCoin@/# sdptool search DUN
sdptool search DUN
Inquiring ...
Inquiry failed

and

Code: Select all
127|InsertCoin@/data/data/com.android_rsap.dunplugin/app_bin# ./rfcomm show 0
./rfcomm show 0
Can't open RFCOMM control socket: Protocol not supported
1|InsertCoin@/data/data/com.android_rsap.dunplugin/app_bin#

Does this mean, the kernel module is not working properly?

This doesn't look very good. HTC used to ship BlueZ tools with it's ROMs although they didn't work, because they used the Broadcom Bluetooth stack and not BlueZ. Maybe this is still the case with the One X+?

The kernel module is not yet used at this point.

So this means you don't see any chances to get the DUN plugin running on the One X+?

Doesn't look like. The DUN plugin is obsolete anyway, because recent Android versions no longer support the BlueZ Bluetooth stack. The only possibility would be changing from the Linux tools to a Java/VPN solution similar to BlueVPN. But this looks like a lot of work...
